Gardening helps teach children responsibility and promotes physical activity and outdoor experiences that support children’s health and development. However, not all children have access to outdoor spaces like gardens to learn and play.
A study found that families of color and families living in low-income neighborhoods are less likely to have access to parks or outdoor spaces. Low-income schools are also less likely to have gardens.
ECE program gardens can provide a space for children to learn, play, and explore outdoors. And, they can be low-cost! If your program has a garden, involve children in planning, planting, harvesting, and more. If your program doesn’t have a garden yet, check out our Tips & Materials library for resources to help you get started.
